La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico – A quick and coordinated rescue saved the life of an American tourist who was swept about two miles offshore while swimming near the popular beach town of Los Barriles.
The incident occurred in the afternoon near the pier of the Palmas de Cortés Hotel, when the strong current pulled the swimmer away from shore. Members of the Fondo para la Protección de los Recursos Marinos (Fonmar), who were in the area conducting inspections and issuing fishing permits, responded immediately to the emergency call.
With the help of the boat “Don Julio”, rescuers located the man in open water and brought him safely back to shore. He received basic medical attention at the scene and, fortunately, did not require hospital treatment. The tourist was later reunited with his family in good health.
